Hello friends,
If you’re reading this it’s because you’re subscribed to my Substack, The Tinderbox. I want to let you know that I’m now relaunching it as The Beckoning. Why? Because when I first started The Tinderbox, I wanted to write about the creative journey — the blocks, pitfalls and challenges that we encounter on it.
But now, I want to write about more than that. In part because, recently, my life has been through a lot of changes.
A few months ago, I returned to Scotland from Mexico and felt a beckoning to live a life of wandering for a while. And so, I followed it. I became a full-time house-sitter and pet-sitter, partly to see new places and partly to set myself free from the pressure of rent and bills (it’s a tough time to be a freelance writer right now).
Now I’m travelling across Britain, from the Scottish Highlands to the south coast of England, from villages to cities, and from old vicarages to remote farmhouses. I want to share my experiences with you — the good and the bad.
I’ll also be writing about anything else that interests me, including wild places and liminal spaces. Forgotten histories and hidden paths. Myths, mysteries and mysticism. Hermits and wanderers and eccentrics. And about anything that beckons us to take a new path and discover lost parts of ourselves.
Our world is becoming increasingly bewildering — maybe you feel it too? This means that it’s more important than ever to tune out the noise and get back to what really matters. That is what I’m trying to do now, one new destination at a time.
I hope that you’ll join me on the journey. And if you’d consider upgrading to a paid subscription, or buying me a coffee, or sharing The Beckoning, then that would really help to support my writing — and also help me to return to a more secure and rooted life eventually.
Love,
